"Roof shingles" is not one material. Asphalt, wood, slate, tile and metal each demand a different answer — and sometimes that answer is to leave them alone.

What is the surface?

"Roof shingles" covers several distinct materials — asphalt (composition) shingles, wood shakes/shingles, slate, clay or concrete tile, and metal roofing — each with very different compositions, lifespans, and treatment needs. There is no single answer for "shingles" as a category; the right approach depends entirely on which type you have.

What problems occur?

Depending on type: asphalt shingles lose granules and become brittle with UV/age; wood shakes can weather, split, or grow moss/algae in damp climates; tile and slate are generally very durable but can develop surface staining or moss; metal roofing can oxidize or, in some coated systems, suffer coating breakdown over time.

Does coating a roof actually make sense?

It depends heavily on the shingle type — and this needs to be evaluated case by case, not assumed. For example, coating some asphalt shingle roofs can interfere with their designed granule/ventilation performance or void manufacturer warranties. Wood shakes may benefit from specific water-repellent or fire-retardant treatments designed for that material, but the wrong product can trap moisture and accelerate rot. Tile and slate are often left uncoated by design, as coatings can trap moisture beneath the surface. Metal roofing is the category where recoating is most commonly a legitimate maintenance step, since many metal roof coatings are designed specifically for that purpose.

What should be considered before treating it?

Shingle/material type first and foremost, the roof's age and remaining expected lifespan, manufacturer warranty terms (which can be voided by aftermarket coatings), local climate (moss/algae risk, UV exposure, freeze-thaw), and whether the actual problem is the surface material or an underlying issue (ventilation, flashing, structural).

What can professional treatment achieve, when it's appropriate?

Where treatment is genuinely suited to the material — such as certain metal roof coatings, or wood-specific water repellents — professional application can extend service life, improve weather resistance, and address moss/algae growth, using products matched to that specific roofing material.

How is it maintained?

Maintenance varies by material: metal roofs may be periodically recoated per manufacturer guidance; wood shakes may need re-treatment on a defined schedule; tile and slate typically need only debris/moss removal and flashing inspection rather than any coating at all.
