Glass Surface Protection

Glass is hard and non-porous, which is why its deterioration is so often misdiagnosed. Most 'dirty' glass is chemically corroded glass.

Surface protection starts with understanding the surface.

What is the surface?

Architectural glass is an amorphous silicate. Its surface is not chemically inert: alkaline water, cementitious runoff and prolonged moisture leach sodium out of the surface layer, roughening it at a microscopic scale. Coated glass — low-E, reflective, self-cleaning — adds a functional layer that some treatments and cleaning methods will destroy.

What problems occur?

Hard water spotting and mineral scale. Stage-one and stage-two corrosion from irrigation overspray or construction runoff. Etching from acidic restoration cleaners. Scratching from improper scraping. Permanent haze once corrosion progresses beyond surface deposits.

Why protect it?

Protective treatments make glass hydrophobic, so water sheets off and carries minerals with it rather than evaporating and depositing them. Cleaning intervals lengthen and cleaning effort drops. On shower enclosures and façades this is often the difference between glass that lasts and glass that has to be replaced.

What should be considered before protection?

Whether existing damage is deposit or corrosion — treating over corrosion locks the damage in. Coated or laminated glass and manufacturer restrictions. Water chemistry and irrigation exposure. Orientation and heat load. Access for future maintenance.

What can professional protection achieve?

Cleaner appearance for longer, easier maintenance and reduced likelihood of corrosion taking hold. It does not repair existing corrosion; that requires restoration first, and restoration is not always possible.

How is it maintained?

Neutral cleaners, soft media, no abrasive pads or blades on coated glass, correcting the water source where irrigation is the cause, and periodic performance checks to see whether water still beads and sheets as expected.

The critical judgement is whether the glass can be restored before it is protected. Getting that sequence wrong makes the damage permanent.
